# Organize Research with Projects and Tags

> Group studies in shared project workspaces and use tags to categorize research.

Use a **project** for a research program with related studies, conversations, and outputs. Use **tags** for reusable categories such as market, brand, or research method. Projects can grant access to their contents; tags organize studies without acting as sharing permissions.

## Enable and create projects

An organization admin can open **Settings → Organization → Projects** and turn on **Enable projects**. Organization members can then create projects from the **Projects** sidebar section. Enter a project name and, optionally, a description.

Turning **Enable projects** off hides the sidebar section. Existing projects are retained; disabling the section does not delete their studies or replace an access review.

## Add and remove studies

Open a project and use its content controls to open **Add content to project**. Select the studies to include, review the selected set, and choose **Save**. Updating the project's studies requires project editing access.

A study belongs to at most one project. Selecting a study that belongs to another project moves its project association; it does not create a copy. Removing a study from the selected set removes its association with the current project.

Review permissions before moving studies: project access is inherited by contents, so a move can change who can reach a study through a project. Direct study and team grants remain separate.

## Share a project

A project **Manager** can manage its sharing. Share with specific colleagues or teams using the appropriate role:

| Project role | Access                                                              |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Viewer       | View the project and inherit viewing access through the project.    |
| Editor       | Work on the project and inherit editing access through the project. |
| Manager      | Manage project sharing as well as edit and view.                    |

Organization admins have automatic project access. A project creator has automatic access while still a member of its organization. A more restrictive direct study grant does not cancel stronger inherited project access. See [Study Sharing](/docs/settings-and-management/permissions-and-sharing#permission-hierarchy).

Project deletion has a separate rule: an organization admin can delete a project, and a creator can delete their own project when it has no studies. Project deletion is not a bulk-erasure command for the underlying study records. Review study access and retention separately.

## Work across project studies

Use the project hub to find its studies, conversations, reports, and slide decks. Start a conversation from the project to ask [Talk to Your Data](/docs/interview-data/talk-to-your-data) questions across the relevant studies.

The assistant can only work with data the current user can access. A saved conversation's associated studies and permissions matter independently of the project's current study list; check its scope when reusing older conversations after reorganizing research.

## Manage tags

Organization admins manage the shared tag list in **Settings → Organization → Tags**. Create a tag, rename an existing tag, or delete a tag after reviewing its usage. Tag names support up to 50 characters, and an existing name cannot be created again in the same organization.

Assign existing tags through a study's tag selector in its design settings. Changing a study's tags requires study editing access. A study can have several tags, making tags useful for overlapping categories that do not fit a single project.

Renaming a tag updates the shared tag rather than creating a second category. Deleting a tag removes that category from the studies using it; it does not delete the studies. Tags do not grant study access.
