# Image Heatmap

> Show one image and map the parts participants talk about, with sentiment and quotes. A verbal attention map, not eye-tracking.

An image heatmap question shows participants one image and builds a map from what they say about it. You see which parts of the image come up in the conversation, and the reasons participants give.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Image heatmap is available to every organization. It is listed with a **Beta** badge in the question type menu. There is no extra charge beyond normal interview time. A notice that it is free during the beta can still appear in the product.

## What it is

An image heatmap is a verbal attention map. Themes from participants' answers are placed on the image as regions, with sentiment and quotes, so you can read why people talk about a part of the image.

Image heatmap does not record gaze or eye movement. Taps on the image are off, so participants cannot mark a spot by tapping or clicking. The map comes only from what participants say.

The question holds exactly one image. Comparisons, videos, embeds, and randomized sets of images belong on [stimuli](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/stimuli.md), on a question type that supports them.

## When to use it

Use an image heatmap when you need the reasons behind comments on a single image: a pack, an advertisement, a concept board, a shelf, or a screen.

* **Packaging and ads.** Hear which claim, color, or logo people talk about, and what they say about it.
* **Concept boards.** Separate comments about one area from comments about the whole idea.
* **One image, then the why.** You will show a single picture and you want the parts people mention, with their own words.

Choose another question when the job is different. A [single-image stimulus](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/stimuli.md#single-image) shows an image beside an ordinary question and does not build this map. An [image comparison](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/stimuli.md#image-comparison) or [randomized stimuli](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/stimuli.md#randomized-stimuli) is the way to show more than one image. Qualification before the interview belongs on [screener questions](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/screener-questions.md). Image heatmap is not available there.

## Adding an image heatmap question

1. Add an **Image heatmap** question to the [topic guide](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/setting-up-topic-guide.md) and write the question. Image heatmap is listed with a **Beta** badge in the question type menu.
2. Add the one image the question shows. The question accepts exactly one image.
3. If you want the moderator to ask only the words you wrote, include an instruction to look at the image and to name the specific parts the answer is about. Otherwise the moderator adds one sentence. See [What participants see](#what-participants-see).
4. [Test the interview](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/testing-your-study.md) on a phone and on a computer. Listen for whether that extra sentence is spoken.

The question needs that one image. It cannot hold a second image, a side-by-side comparison, or a randomized set.

## What participants see

Participants see the one image and answer out loud. Taps on the image are off.

The moderator then handles the "specific parts" instruction in one of two ways:

* **The question already asks for it.** If the question tells people to look at the image and to name the specific parts their answer is about, the moderator asks the question as written.
* **The question does not.** The moderator adds one sentence after the question. The sentence is in the question's language. It asks participants to look at the image, use the microphone, and say which specific parts their answer is about.

The added sentence does not name parts of the image, such as a logo or a headline, and it does not ask for a rating. The moderator does not invent part names or ratings.

In a study with more than one participant language, each participant hears that sentence in the language of the question they are asked.

## Analyzing results

Open the question in [Question coding](https://conveo.ai/docs/insights-and-reports/question-analysis.md).

The analysis shows themes as regions on the image. A theme includes sentiment and quotes from the answers that support it. From a theme you can open the interviews behind it.

Two placement rules change how a theme is drawn:

* **Nearly the whole image.** A theme about almost the entire image is not drawn as a box. It is listed as **not placed**.
* **A single mention.** A theme that only one participant mentioned can sit under **Other mentions** instead of as its own region.

Read the quotes before treating a region as a finding. The region is an interpretation of what people said. It is not a measurement of where they looked.

## Limitations

* **One image.** The question shows exactly one image. Use [stimuli](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/stimuli.md) when participants need a comparison, several concepts, a video, or another asset type.
* **Verbal only.** Participants do not tap or click the image. There is no click map.
* **Not eye-tracking.** Image heatmap does not record gaze or where someone looked.
* **Not in screeners.** Image heatmap is not available as a [screener question](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/screener-questions.md).
* **No invented parts or ratings.** The sentence the moderator adds does not name parts of the image and does not ask for a score.
* **Not every comment becomes a box.** Comments about nearly the whole image are listed as **not placed**. A theme mentioned once can appear under **Other mentions**.
* **Beta badge stays.** The question type menu keeps the **Beta** badge. Availability is not limited to selected organizations.

## Tips

* **Write the instruction in when the wording matters.** If the question already asks people to look at the image and name specific parts, the moderator asks it as written. Leave that instruction out only when the added sentence is what you want participants to hear.
* **Use an image people can describe.** Parts have to be distinguishable in speech. A picture whose areas cannot be named will produce broad comments, and those comments are listed as **not placed** when they cover nearly the whole image.
* **Keep it to one image.** A second concept, a before-and-after, or a randomized set is a [stimulus](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/stimuli.md) on another question.
* **Test both wordings.** Run a [test interview](https://conveo.ai/docs/setup-to-launch/testing-your-study.md) with a question that already asks for specific parts, and one that does not, so you can hear the added sentence in the question's language.
* **Check quotes on the map.** Sentiment and region labels summarize speech. Open the quotes and the interviews before you report a part of the image as a result.
