# Dashboard & metrics

> Track the numbers that matter and watch them trend wave over wave, alongside the qualitative story

Insights tell you *what's happening and why*. Metrics tell you *how much and which
way it's moving*. A Storyline gives you both, and the dashboard is where the
quantitative side lives — the numbers you want to watch on every wave, trended
over time.

## Metrics

A **metric** tracks one measure across waves — for example, the share of
participants who mention a competitor, or how a satisfaction question trends. You
can optionally **split** a metric by a group (like region, age, or customer tier)
to see how the measure differs across segments, not just in aggregate.

Because a Storyline re-analyzes on a cadence, a metric isn't a single number —
it's a line over waves. That's the point: you can see the direction of travel and
spot a change while it's still small.

## Dashboards

A **dashboard** is where you arrange the metrics and charts that matter most into
one view. You can have more than one dashboard in a Storyline, so different
audiences or questions each get a focused board instead of one crowded page. Your
key measures stay a glance away, and every board updates automatically as new
waves land.

## Why this matters

* **Catch change early.** A trend line across waves surfaces a shift long before
  it's obvious in any single wave's write-up.
* **Quant meets qual.** Pairing a moving metric with the insight that explains it
is far more convincing than either alone — the number shows *that* something
  changed, the insight shows *why*.
* **A shared source of truth.** A dashboard gives your team one continuously
updated view, so nobody's working from a stale export.
* **Less manual tracking.** The measures you'd otherwise re-pull every month are
computed and charted automatically, every wave.

## The Overview

You don't have to build a dashboard to get value on day one. A Storyline's
**Overview** already surfaces the latest insights, the metrics you're tracking,
and suggestions for what to look at next — a ready-made starting point each time
you open the program. Build dedicated dashboards when you want a focused,
arranged view for a specific question or audience.
