# Insights

> How a Storyline generates findings each wave and threads them across waves so you can see how they evolve

An **insight** is a synthesized finding from your research — a clear headline
("Younger shoppers are switching to the app for weekly orders"), a short
explanation, the participant quotes that back it up, and suggested next steps.
Every study in Conveo produces insights. What makes Storyline insights special is
that they don't start from scratch each time — they're tracked *across* waves.

## How insights are generated

Each wave, Conveo works from the raw interviews up:

1. **Signals** — Conveo first detects *signals*: raw patterns in the wave's data,
   like a shift in how a particular group answers a question or two things that
   keep coming up together. Signals are the evidence layer.
2. **Synthesis** — related signals are grouped and written up into insights, each
   with a plain-language summary, the supporting quotes, and recommended next
   steps.
3. **Threading** — Conveo then compares this wave's insights to previous waves and
   links the ones that are the same underlying story into a single **thread**
   (more below).

You can open any insight to see its summary, the underlying signals, the
participant quotes, and its thread across waves.

## Why Storyline insights are different

In a one-shot study, an insight is a snapshot: it's true for the batch you
analyzed, and that's the end of it. In a Storyline, an insight is part of an
ongoing story. Because Conveo threads findings across waves, each insight carries
a **lifecycle status** that tells you how it's behaving over time:

| Status         | What it means                                           |
| -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Emerging**   | New this wave — a finding Conveo hasn't reported before |
| **Ongoing**    | Seen again, holding steady from previous waves          |
| **Escalating** | The same finding, but getting stronger                  |
| **Evolving**   | The story is shifting — the finding is changing shape   |
| **Dormant**    | Quiet this wave, but not gone — may resurface           |
| **Ended**      | No longer showing up; the story has closed              |

Threads can also **merge** (two findings converge into one story) or **split**
(one story separates into distinct ones) as the picture develops.

That status is the payoff of an always-on program: you can tell at a glance
whether you're looking at something brand new, a durable truth, or a shift in
motion — which you simply can't get from a single study.

## Reading an insight's thread

Open an insight and you'll see its **thread**: each wave's version of the finding,
in order, with how it changed at each step. This is the arc of the story — when
it first emerged, the waves where it held, and the points where it escalated or
evolved. Reading the thread tells you not just *what* is true now, but *how it
got here*.

## Signals: the evidence underneath

Every insight is backed by one or more **signals** — the raw findings Conveo
detected in the data. Signals are where the "why" lives: the specific pattern,
the group it applies to, and how strong it is. When you want to scrutinize an
insight rather than take it at face value, drop down to its signals.

## Suggested next steps

Because a Storyline is meant to drive ongoing action, each insight comes with
**suggested next steps** — concrete follow-ups like tracking a metric, digging in
with a deeper question, or adding the finding to a report — so a finding turns
into a decision rather than sitting on a board.
