Key Concepts Explained
Study Testing vs. Live Study: Testing creates a safe environment where you can experience your interview exactly as participants will, but without affecting your actual study data. Think of it as a dress rehearsal before the real performance. Interview Flow: This refers to how questions are presented, how the AI responds to participant answers, and how follow-up questions are triggered. Testing helps you verify that this flow feels natural and captures the insights you’re looking for. Question-Level Testing: Instead of going through the entire interview each time, you can jump to specific questions to test individual parts of your study. This is especially useful when you’ve made changes to particular questions and want to see how they perform.Pro Tips
- Test multiple scenarios: Don’t just give “perfect” answers during testing. Try giving short responses, long responses, and even slightly off-topic answers to see how your AI interviewer handles different participant behaviors.
- Use the question-level testing strategically: When you make changes to your topic guide, test from that specific question rather than starting from the beginning each time. This saves time and lets you focus on what you’ve modified.
- Share test links with team members: The “copy test link” option is perfect for getting feedback from colleagues before launch. They can experience the interview without needing access to your Conveo account.
- Pay attention to the preview stage: The camera and microphone setup screen is what participants will see first. Make sure the instructions are clear and the technical requirements work smoothly.

- Share this link with team members or anyone you want to test the interview
- They can test without needing Conveo account access
- Click “Start a test interview”
- This immediately opens a new tab with your interview
- You’ll experience it exactly as a real participant would
- Scroll down to the specific question you want to test
- Click “Test from here” below that question
- The interview will start from that point, skipping earlier questions
- Perfect for testing modifications to individual questions
Step 3: Experience the Participant Journey
- Technical Setup: You’ll first see a preview screen to test your camera and microphone
- Instructions: Review the guidance participants receive about recording responses
- Begin Interview: Click “Begin the interview” to start the actual testing experience
- Question Flow: Experience how questions are presented and how the AI responds to your answers
- AI Interaction: Test how the AI probes for follow-up questions based on your responses
Step 4: Iterate and Improve
- Take notes during testing about areas for improvement
- Exit the test and return to your topic guide
- Make necessary adjustments to questions, settings, or AI behavior
- Re-test specific areas using question-level testing
- Repeat until you’re satisfied with the interview experience
Best Practices
Before You Start:- Have a clear idea of what you want to test (overall flow, specific questions, AI behavior)
- Prepare different types of responses to test various scenarios
- Consider involving team members who weren’t involved in creating the study for fresh perspectives
- Test edge cases: give very short answers, very long answers, or slightly irrelevant responses
- Pay attention to timing and pacing - does the interview feel natural?
- Note any technical issues with audio, video, or interface elements
- Complete at least one full test interview yourself before launching
- Share test links with team members for additional feedback
- Verify that all technical requirements work smoothly across different devices
- Ensure your questions flow logically and produce the insights you need
