How to set up this study for your category
A few stetup rules:
Build your task or item list before fielding. Fifteen items shown four at a time is a reasonable starting point; adjust based on how many things you actually need ranked
Keep the warm-up brief. Its only job is to surface context, not to collect data ahead of the exercise itself
Do not probe during the transition question. It exists purely to set up the exercise; probing here adds no value and slows the interview down
Where trade-off prioritization research goes wrong
Three failure modes to watch for:
Treating the ranking as the whole finding. A MaxDiff score tells you what ranks highest, not why. Always pair it with the qualitative debrief, or you lose the reasoning that makes the ranking actionable.
Building too short an item list. If the list is too narrow, the exercise won't reveal meaningful trade-offs. Include enough genuinely competing items that participants have to make real choices.
Skipping the missing-item check. Always ask whether something important was left out. A fixed item list can miss the task that actually matters most to a specific participant.
